Eyebrows 101: How to Shape Your Brows

Eyebrows are the new emphasis of the face. In magazines nowadays, photoshoots, ads and television, the trend right now is beautifully shaped, full and defined eyebrows. Your eyebrows can frame your eyes just like your hair can frame your face.  Hence, it is important that you know how to groom and fill in your brows to make your face lifted. Today, I'll teach you some of my eyebrow tips. :)

1. DON'T OVER-PLUCK. - Please put down that tweezer after you have plucked the stray hairs off your eyebrows! There is nothing pretty about over-tweezed brows.

2.  FAKE IT WITH CONCEALER. - If you can't go to the threading/waxing salon because of some reason, and you can't stand going somewhere without having perfect brows, go ahead and dab concealer on parts with stray hairs!

3. KNOW YOUR FACE SHAPE. - Your face shape will determine the shape of your brows. Like if you have a round face, your eyebrows should have a higher "arch" to make it look slimmer. And if you have sharper features and angles, you can probably lower or soften your eyebrow arch.

4. SYMMETRY IS IMPORTANT. - Of course, you'd want your eyebrows to look alike. But remember this: "Your eyebrows should look like sisters, not twins."--some old eyebrow proverb

5. PRACTICE. - With practice, you can do anything better. You can practice using different tools and products that would suit your eyebrows. Start with eyebrow pencils, powders and gels--whatever works for your unique brow shape!

Here's a quick tutorial on how to shape your brows:

*Keep in mind that there are different eyebrow shapes. There is no one specific brow shape for all of us! In the end, it all boils down to personal preference for the look that you are going for.
*Symmetrical brows do not exist. Makeup and grooming just creates the illusion of having them.
*If you are having a hard time shaping and filling in your can even buy eyebrow stencils to make your life easier! :)

Below is a guide to understanding which brow shape is best for each face shape:
*Image is from the Moonberry Blog

Let's face it, your brows can make or break your entire look. Choosing the right shape can also be flattering and can help create the illusion of a slimmer face. Always remember these tips and just have fun with it. Watch out for my next blog post because it will be about how to fill in eyebrows. Can't wait to post it! >_<

Makeup Tip Tuesday: Dark Eye Bags Begone!

Most of us are dealing with dark under-eye circles--maybe because of stress, lack of sleep or just genes. And because of this, we may even look older than our real age. People have asked me how to properly conceal the dark circles under their eyes so they will look less tired and more refreshed. Some of them have claimed that even when they put concealer, their eye bags do change color (from dark to light), but would stand out more (look puffy), rather than be hidden. My answer to this is simple. Apply your concealer in a triangular form! :)

Now wait, what? Youth triangles? What are those? Let me explain. The youth triangles of your face are these:

See those two triangles? Those are the areas of the face that we'd like to highlight to look young and fresh. And I swear, by applying this technique, you'll have an instant face lift in no time! :) Here's how we do it:

Get a liquid/creamy concealer (1 or 2 shades lighter than your skin tone) and apply it from your lower lash line downwards. Continue applying it outwards until you read the outer corner part of your eye.
Blend with your ring finger using a patting/rolling motion (or a sponge if you prefer) and you get this! See the difference between the left and right side?
Now, let's compare this technique to the way we usually apply concealer.
Dot the concealer on your dark circles/eye bags and then blend with your ring finger.

And you get this. Look how the left side of my face sags than the right side!

The youth triangle technique does wonders to your face in minutes! I promise, if this trick is done correctly, your face will be more lifted and appear more glowing and well-rested. Now pack your bags (pun intended), do yourself a favor and give yourself an instant face lift! :)

Technique was done on the right side. I love how that side of my face seems more lifted as opposed to the left side, which appears more tired and baggy.

Beauty Smackdown: Urban Decay Primer Potion vs e.l.f. Eyelid Primer

I have hooded eyelids. Hooded eyelids are eyelids without the usual visible "crease" on standard eyes. When you look straight to a mirror and you don't see your eyelids, it means you have hooded eyes. It frustrates me at times because when I apply eye makeup, and open my eyes, it's as if I didn't apply any eye shadow at all! Plus, when I wear eye shadow, my lids tend to get oilier as the day progresses which results to a lot of creasing or oil bundling up on the folds of my eyes. And that's not a pretty site! Good thing makeup companies have thought of a solution...eye shadow primers!

Eye shadow primers are what you put on your eyelids prior to eye shadow application. It helps your eye shadow to stay put the entire day, prevents creasing by controlling oil and makes the color of the eye shadows more intense. So here I am with a Beauty Smackdown for two eye shadow primers:
Urban Decay Primer Potion VS e.l.f. Mineral Eyelid Primer

Let's find out which eye shadow primer is better!

Contestant #1 - Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original
-  Urban Decay is not available in the Philippines :(
-  Priced at Php900-1200 in most online shops
-  Urban Decay describes the product as "coveted by makeup artists and makeup junkies alike because it guarantees more vibrant eye shadow that lasts for 24 hours and NEVER CREASES!"
-  contains 11ml of product and comes in a squeeze tube

- The packaging!  With this tube packaging, you'll definitely get more bang for your buck! Before, it used to be a "potion" type and has a bent doe foot applicator (which was unhygienic btw), but you wouldn't really get all of the product out!
- Packaging is more hygienic. Makeup artists can definitely use this product!
- It does what it says! Minimal to no creasing even after 8hrs and the eye shadows stay put no matter what.
- When used, eye shadows have increased color intensity, compared to when using no primers.
- It absorbs into your skin fast and appears invisible once set.
- It has no smell.

- It is quite sticky, which could cause your eye shadow application to be uneven. You have to use a light hand to blend.
-  It is so expensive.
-  It contains parabens.
-  It is unavailable in our country.

Smart packaging right here!

Dries to an invisible finish

Contestant #2 - E.L.F. Mineral Eyelid Primer
-  Available at elf counters in SM dept stores and other drug stores
-  Costs Php 129.75
-  The Eyes Lips Face website describes that this product preps your lids for smoother, long-lasting and crease-proof eye shadow.

-  It is true to its claim--eye shadow lasts longer, no creasing and makes eye shadow application smoother and easier.
-  The product is readily available in several e.l.f. counters.
-  It is so cheap! :) Php 129.75 is a pretty fair price to pay for a product so effective such as this.
- It is not a sticky base. It dries into a smooth powder-like finish, which helps in applying eye shadow easily.
-  It also has no smell.
-  It is mineral based so I feel that this is good for your skin.

-  I don't like the packaging of this product. It comes in a tube with a sponge-tip applicator. You wouldn't get all the product out of the tube with this kind of packaging. I guess it's okay if it's for personal use only, but for MUAs it's something to consider. At the neck of the tube, there's a bit of drying of the product, because of the wand applicator which pumps air in and out.
-  Since the product is not a sticky base, eye shadows don't easily "cling" to it. It doesn't have the intensifying color effect compared to the UDPP. But this can be remedied by using high quality/highly pigmented eye shadows instead.

elf Eyelid Primer! It doesn't say how much product is inside though.

Comes with a straight sponge tip wand applicator
It has a very sheer finish.
Some of the product dried up on the neck of the plastic tube.

I applied the UDPP and the elf primer on my arm, and in between there's no primer whatsoever. I swatched an eye shadow twice on each of these.

And the winner is.................. the e.l.f. Eyelid Primer!

I think both of these products are great at making your eye shadow crease-proof and last all day. The main difference between them is that the elf one does not "grab" eye shadows the same way as the UDPP does, because it is not sticky. I think this makes the elf product more user-friendly especially for beginners in eye shadow application. Although the Urban Decay primer really helps enhance the color pay off of your eyeshadows, I feel that it is recommended for experienced users or for MUAs who know how to work with this product. Also, the elf primer has a milder formulation since it is mineral-based, as compared to the UDPP which has a different formulation and contains parabens. But what really tipped over the two was the price. Elf clearly won this round because not only was it effective, but it is also budget-friendly and readily available in the Philippines. YAY for the elf eyelid primer! :)

FS Cosmetics Eyelash Curler

Hola! Let's talk about eyelash curlers. Have you bought an eyelash curler that is wimpy and doesn't do its job? How many of you have hurt their eyelids or plucked out their lashes because of their eyelash curlers? Perhaps many of you have, and are a bit skeptical on buying inexpensive eyelash curlers because we all know how painful it is to get pinched when using the wrong curler. It's totally the worst part of your face to mess around with a tool that reminds you of surgical scissors. Ha ha!

The best eyelash curlers in the market are fom Shu Uemura, Shiseido and Bobbi Brown. They really give you that lovely curl in seconds but they also burn a hole in your wallet! Today, I'm about to reveal to you a local product that could be a dupe for Shu Uemura's eyelash curler. I discovered an eyelash curler that is cheap AND effective at the same time!

Meet the FS Cosmetics (previously known as Fanny Serrano Cosmetics) eyelash curler!!!

The FS Cosmetics Eyelash Curler is usually available in SM Dept Stores for only Php175.00!

I like that it's a local brand and so budget-friendly!  They also sell extra pads in 3s separately for only Php45.00. Quite a steal if you ask me! :)
I like that the brand is seen on top of the curler; I find it appealing. Hmm... This reminds of the Shu Uemura curler because of the cursive engraving of the brand on one side.

Here's how my lashes look like before and after curling them with my FS Cosmetics eyelash curler. It definitely gives my lashes a nice curl!

I love this eyelash curler because it only takes a few presses to curl my lashes and I like how it separates clumped-together lashes as well. It doesn't easily pinch my skin nor pull the hairs. It is quite cheap and does its job of curling your lashes. I'd recommend this to anyone who's looking for an eyelash curler that's inexpensive but also does its job. You can buy this eyelash curler in most SM Dept stores at FS Cosmetics counters nationwide. If you are hesitant to buy Shu's or Shiseido's, then this would definitely be a good start. It is one of my favorite eyelash curlers to use. :) When paired with a good mascara, the curl will hold its place the entire day!

How about you? What are your favorite eyelash curlers? :)

Sleek MakeUP Haul

Hooray, for my very first Sleek MakeUP haul! :) Sleek MakeUP is a colour cosmetics brand dedicated to providing a makeup range for women at truly affordable prices. It is from the UK and is known as one of the best drugstore brands in the country. The makeup line has a variety of colors and shades catering to different skin tones, which is really awesome!

I first heard of Sleek from the Pixiwoo sisters on Youtube (these siblings are great MUAs!) way back and I was praying that this makeup brand would come to the Philippines. And wow, I am so lucky, you guys! Sleek did make it here in the Philippines!I was so happy to see it in The Ramp stores. However, I did not buy all of these items from The Ramp. Some of them, I bought from The Updated Trends, an online seller of foreign makeup brands. I was so happy to have found this store as well during a bazaar in WTC. So yeah, enough rambling and here's my haul for you guys! :)

These were the items I bought from The Updated Trends:
Tinted Lip Conditioner in Pink Cadillac
i-Divine Mineral Based Eye Shadow Palette in Oh So Special
The last two were bought from Sleek MakeUP in The Ramp Glorietta. :)
True Colour Lipstick in Fuchsia (such a nice color!)

Face Contour Kit in Light (My favorite contour kit at the moment!) - The package comes with a matte brown powder and an iridescent cream-colored highlight powder.

Stay tuned for the reviews and swatches on these products! :)

REVIEW: Model in a Bottle Make-up Setting Spray

I first heard of Model in a Bottle from The Tyra Banks Show a few years back.  I bought it from Suesh in Market! Market! for about P850.00-950.00. This product claims to set your makeup to a translucent matte finish and lets your face and eye makeup to stay in place all day.

I bought the one for "sensitive skin" because I feel that the product might break me out and clog my pores. Better safe than sorry. :)

It is meant to contain over 300 sprays. As seen in the picture, I am already halfway through because I had to transfer the product to a separate atomizer. The packaging for me was a total dud. The spray broke on my third usage! Yes, it does look very feminine and luxurious, but I feel that it compromises the function of the product. The overall feel of the bottle is a bit slippery when you try to spray the product onto your face. It is made of glass, which is a bit too heavy for me when I spray. I dropped it one time while spraying and expected it to break, but fortunately it didn't.

When I used it over my makeup, I was waiting for it to set into a matte finish, but what I got was a dewy finish!

However, my makeup did stay in place all day. It was amazing! My makeup truly held up from 9 to 5. It didn't control the oil on my face though. I had to use my blotting sheets after 2 hours. At the end of the day, my makeup looked like this.

But what threw me off was the smell of the product. When I spray, I always have to hold my breath because I couldn't stand the fragrance of the product! I feel that it has an "alcohol-y" scent. Plus, it stings my eyes sometimes even if I close my eyes upon application. And true enough, it did contain alcohol when I checked the ingredients at the back.
It contains SD Alcohol, which is used to control oil temporarily. But with regular and long term use, it might overproduce the oil that has been removed by the alcohol. Yikes!
Overall, I think it's an awesome product because it really does work. It sets your makeup in place and it still looks as good when you first applied it. But if you have sensitive and acne prone skin, I'd say that you avoid using the product on a regular basis. I would recommend that you use this only if you have to attend a formal event or on nights out, when you wouldn't care to touch up much. Here's my rating for Model in a Bottle:

You can buy Model in Bottle from Suesh outlets.

How about you? Do you use setting sprays too? What was your experience? Feel free to comment below! :)

Makeup Tip Tuesday: The Eyeliner Flick

Hello, everyone! It's Makeup Tip Tuesday again! :) Today's tip is all about how to do a proper eyeliner flick. Yes, I was once an eyeliner noob too and I just couldn't get that flick right! At times, the flick would go too far or too near the outer corners of my eyes. And when it does, I find that it just looks tacky and it won't really flatter your eyes, which defeats the purpose of lining them. Even until now, there are days when I still can't get it done with just one try. (Depends on the mood and how shaky my hand is. Ha ha!) So today, I'm going to teach you 3 easy ways to properly place that winged out liner on your eye. May the eyeliner noobs unite! JK. :))

1. TAPE TRICK (NOTE: Avoid doing this trick if you have sensitive skin.)

Apply a piece of tape on the back of your hand first (to make it less sticky) before you place it underneath your eye pointing to the end of your brows. Where you place the tape will dictate the wing of your eyeliner. Make sure the tape is pressed against your skin so the liner will not bleed out. You might want to hold off putting on undereye concealer/foundation first, since the tape will just remove it when you take it out. Apply your liner as you usually do and follow the line that the tape created for you. Fill in the winged part and remove the tape. :) It should look something like this:

If you have sensitive skin and opt not to do the tape trick, then this trick is for you! Get an old business card (or any cardboard type of material... I even used old prepaid cards!) and hold it against your eye where you want to create your flick. Follow the card and make a line going up to the end of your brow. Connect the tip of the line to your upper lashes to make a winged look. Here's what it should look like:

Yup, you can make a perfect wing by just following your natural lower lash line! Look to where your lower lash line ends and imagine it extending towards the end of your brow. Trace that imaginary line and that will be your guide. Again, fill in your winged liner by making a triangle, connecting the tip to the liner. And, voila! You'll have a great flick in no time! :)

I hope I helped you make that eyeliner flick! So which tip suits you and your eye shape? :)

Make Up For Ever Mini Haul

MUFE Mini Haul!
During my stay in MP School, I really enjoyed experimenting and playing with Make Up For Ever products on different models. Since the first day, I was so impressed with all of their products! I even mentally wrote down my own shopping wishlist of the products I wanted to have in my kit. :)) Unfortunately, Make Up For Ever in the Philippines does not have a store anymore, but rumors say they'll be back next year. And so, I discovered this store called 'Make Up Pro' through a classmate in MP and they sell a lot of US, UK and high-end makeup products and tools for a lower price! The really good thing is that they sell MUFE for a much cheaper price than MUFE in stores! How cool is that?! :)

I looked up the store online and finally wrote down my MUFE shopping list. I went to the store and, OMG. It was makeup paradise!! We're talking about MAC, MUFE, Illamasqua, Ben Nye, Sugarpill Cosmetics, OCC, Tom Ford, YSL and many more! I really took my time browsing through their products, and I just had to resist! It was like a candy store for kids, except that it wasn't candy. Kept reminding myself of this: I MUST STICK TO MY LIST (repeat 10 more times). Anyway, enough about the store raving and here's what I got...

From L-R: MUFE HD Primer, MUFE HD Foundation and MUFE Aqua Brow Waterproof Eyebrow Corrector

Make Up For Ever High Definition Primer in 0 - Neutral

This product 'nourishes, moisturizes and softens skin, creating a glowing effect.' and 'creates a protective layer on the skin allowing the foundation to glide on smoothly.' I've tested this product on models and they always say that this product feels really nice on their skin. I tried it and it goes on very light. I like the way it smooths the surface of my skin without really adding a noticeable layer of product on my skin.
MUFE HD Foundation in 117 and 173 - 'an oil-free medium to full coverage liquid foundation, which covers skin imperfections, while remaining invisible on-screen and in real life.' I got two shades so I can mix them according to a client's complexion. I really like the consistency and quality of this product. Still thinking if I should get 1 more shade. :)

MUFE Aqua Brow in 3 and 10
Aqua Brow is a waterproof eyebrow corrector that 'fills, defines and lengthens eyebrows.'

This is my personal favorite! I'm so glad I found this brow product because I tend to be very OC when it comes to shaping and filling in eyebrows. Haha! I just love how pigmented this is and it really does hold up to warm/humid weather. I wish I had gotten 1 more shade though!

Stay tuned for upcoming reviews on these products! :) <3

Tip Tuesday: Eyes Wide Open

Tip Tuesday! :)

Good morning!<3 I'll be starting a new series of posts called 'Tip Tuesday' and every Tuesday, I'll post a quick makeup tip for you guys! :) If you have questions or requests, please feel free to comment below! :)

TODAY'S TIP: Eyes Wide Open Using Just 1 Product

There are days when you just feel so tired and stressed out that it radiates throughout your whole body. Your eyes may look tired and you will look sleepy even if you're not. You have no time to put on a full face of makeup because you are always rushing and you need a quick fix of caffeine to give you that  extra jolt in the morning. And when people see you, they think/say, "Stressed ka 'teh?" Hahaha! Days like these are inevitable! You just have to pull yourself together!

Anyway, here's my quick tip. To achieve that wide-eyed look, curl your lashes and apply 2 coats of WATERPROOF MASCARA. That's it! Instant brighter-looking eyes in just 2 minutes! :) You can actually skip eyeliner because mascara gives you the illusion of thicker lashes already. It's that simple. Try it! :)

My favorite drugstore & budget-friendly mascaras: Maybelline The Falsies Mascara, Cover Girl LashBlast Fusion mascara and Fashion 21 Double Up Mascara

Mascara makes a difference! :)

SM Dept. Store and Watsons HAUL + Mini REVIEW!

And it's HAUL about makeup :))

Hey, everyone! :) It's been about a month since I update this blog (I'm super sorry, guys. I have been sick and feeling down most of the time...), but now, I'm back! :) And finally, I found the right time to blog and I'm back to my happy and healthy self again! Yay! :)

Before I got sick, I went to several SM Department stores and also Watsons in SM Aura to go makeup shopping. Below are the items that I got and I have this HUGE haul for you guys. I also jotted down some of my thoughts about the products upon testing and swatching them. And BTW, the products that I purchased are very budget-friendly! :)

1.  COLLECTION COSMETICS Lasting Perfection 16-Hour Wear Concealer in #3
For just P299.00, you get a really good liquid concealer! Coverage is super awesome and staying power is the bomb! It is blendable and does not feel heavy even if it applies quite thick unlike most liquid concealers, which apply thinly. And with this, a little goes a looooong way. I super like this product! Now, I know why it's been raved about by makeup gurus and bloggers in the UK. :)
2.  COLLECTION COSMETICS Lasting Colour Lipstick in Sweet Tart
I love this color so much! Sweet Tart is a nice pink shade with coral undertones, just perfect for an every day lip color that is not too bright. It stays on for a good 3 hours with blotting, then you have to re-apply again. I really like the sweet candy-like smell of the product as well. :) For just P199.00, you get a creamy lipstick that is not too "in-your-face" pink and suits light-medium skinned ladies.
3.  ESSENCE Fix & Matte! Translucent Loose Powder

I finally found a translucent powder that fits my budget! I bought this for P239.00 at Watsons (SM Aura). It  definitely does what it says. It does mattify your face and set your makeup in place; hence, the name fix & matte! :) It keeps oil at bay for a good 5 hours before I could use my blotting sheets and it does not leave a white cast on the face. It's such a steal for its quality and for 15.5 grams of powder! It's definitely one of my holy grail go-to products! This product is recommended for combination-oily and oily skin.
4.  ESSENCE Long-lasting Eye Pencil in 09 Cool Down
I can say that this is a no-fuss eye pencil. It goes on smoothly without tugging your delicate eye area. And when it sets, it sets for good and doesn't smudge. :) I got it in a slightly shimmery blue for a pop of color on my lids. I like that it's retractable so you don't have to sharpen it and it carries a good amount of product for just P149.00. It comes in a variety of colors too!
5. E.L.F. Contouring Blush and Bronzing Cream in St. Lucia
I find that this product is too oily for my liking. Although I love the color and pigmentation of this product, I feel that it suits people with dry to normal skin. This contour & blush duo is perfect if you are aiming for a dewy and natural flush on your cheeks. Staying power is not too good, though. (Price: P249.00 at SM Dept. Store)
 6.  Ever Bilena ADVANCE Perfect Eyebrow (eyebrow pencil) in Medium Brown
This is one of my favorite purchases from this haul! This eyebrow pencil is so creamy and so pigmented, it makes me wanna say goodbye to my other eyebrow pencils! Ha ha! I got this for ONLY P50.00, okay? I think it is one of the best eyebrow pencils in the local market and it's so cheap! It's really blendable too and a little of it goes a long way. It stays on like a dream as well!  I will absolutely repurchase this when I run out. :))
7. Ever Bilena Colorless Mascara
Super cheap and effective colorless mascara! :) I like putting it on my lashes alone for subtle volume and sometimes I top it off with my fave black mascara for extra definition. It doesn't sting my eyes and doesn't have a pungent smell. But I mostly use this for making those annoying fly-away eyebrow hair stay in place. It does its job for such an affordable price of P110.00. :)
8. Italia Deluxe Max Volume Mascara
Confession: I bought this for the cute mascara wand. Hahaha :)) The mascara applicator is pretty small and is mace-shaped. This eyelash mascara doesn't live up to its name; it doesn't volumize my lashes pretty well and it's not THAT waterproof. It's so messy when I applied it and takes a lot of time to apply (or maybe it's just me?). It does an okay job for getting through those hard-to-reach lashes though because of its wand size. But, would I buy this again even for just P219.00? Nah.
9. Italia Deluxe 24hrs. Longwear Lipcolor in #2 Hot Red and #3 Fuchsia
For P199.00 what do you get? A cheaper alternative for those really expensive long-wearing lip color! This product is absolutely long-wearing but I don't think it holds on for 24 hrs (who'd wear lipstick that long anyway?). It is crazy pigmented and it's so hard to remove; it can actually stain your skin, clothes, etc. It has 2 steps: (1) Apply semi-permanent color base, (2) Put on gloss top coat. The downside is that even if it dries matte, it's sticky. Plus, if you put on the gloss that comes with it, the base product slides off. Weird! But I guess it's an okay product if you want a lip color that stays on. And if you don't mind the stickiness when it sets, then this product is for you.
10. Italia Deluxe Stay On Lip Gloss in 05 Blush
Priced at P219.00 in SM Dept. Stores, this colored gloss claims that it is long-wearing and is kiss-proof (it won't transfer when you kiss someone or when you smack your lips on something). I tried it and it really gives a good stain and dries matte. However, you have to keep in mind that you have to moisturize your lips well before you apply this because it emphasizes the dryness of your lips (it's not much of a 'gloss', really). I don't really like it because it feels uncomfortable on my lips.. like there's a lip tattoo on them or something like that. :P But for the price, color pay off is good and it does its job staying put.

11. REVLON Colorburst Lip Butter in Red Velvet
I just love this Revlon product to the nth level!! :) I bought my 1st one in 'Berry Smoothie' and I was so excited to get another one! But this time, I got it for sale for only P262.00. (*Thank you, Kat for letting me know about the 50% discount! Haha). Good heavens, I cannot say anything negative about this product! (Well maybe that it easily melts in hot weather? But no, I still love it!) I love the shade, makes me feel vintage-y 1940s when I put it on, since it's a deep cherry color. And I like how sheer it goes on at first and then you can build it into a more solid color. Plus, it's super moisturizing! Awesome, right? :)

And that ends my haul and mini review! So which ones do you think you'll buy next time? :) Feel free to comment below! :)
